dandelion_clock @ 07:48 pm: To Get in the Christmas Spirit...
Hi guys,

I'm a student from the University of Illinois and I just wanted to spread the word about a 24hr Carol Hotline that we students run during our finals week before winter break.

The Carol Hotline is called Snyder Hall "Dail-a-Carol" and it is a free, non-profit, just for fun volunteer hotline run and staffed by the Students that live in the Snyder Hall dorm at U of I. Basically, the jist of the program is, anyone is welcome to call our number and request us to play them a Christmas carol or winter holiday song out of our stock of CDs. It is just a fun way to get into the holiday spirit. No one makes any money, and it doesn't cost you a dime apart from whatever your phone company likes to charge you for making calls. The hotline runs from Midnight last night to Midnight of Friday the 14th.

So if you feel like hearing a carol give us a call at 1-217-332-1882

Also, if you have friends or family in the 217 area code, you can request us to call them up and play a Carol/Holiday song for them, but unfortunately we're not allowed to dial outside the area code.

scarecroe @ 01:02 pm: Christmas Sepcials!
Holy smokes! They still run Rudolph, Frosty, the Grinch and all those kooky specials on TV!

I've got Charlie Brown on DVD, but my Tivo is all set for the other ones. Now I can snuggle in with some egg nog and chill with the Heat Miser :·)

ladycatherina @ 12:57 pm: Christmas Canon!
My favorite carol is the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Christmas Canon - Pachelbel's Canon with a choir in the background. I like the acoustic version better since it's more in keeping with the traditional nature of Pachelbel and since I like the harmony of all the children's voices in the video. Also I enjoy Greensleeves, O Holy Night, and Hark the Herald Angels.

I am looking for a Secret Santa for my disabled friend's two children, niece, nephew, and a young family friend. The family has fallen on hard times this year after she lost her husband and became even more sick than she was before. Please let me know if anyone here would be interested in helping, or could direct us towards an organization that could accept late registration and help provide some gifts. I'll provide my friend's address upon request. Read more...Collapse )

value_meal_2 @ 04:02 pm: This community is still alive, right?

You Are "Joy to the World"

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And heaven and nature sing,

It's not about what you get under the tree
But sharing love with family, friends, and strangers

value_meal_2 @ 05:21 pm: Pet peeves
Okay, this really bugs me.

In the 12 days of Christmas, the 4th verse should be "colly birds", which is a type of black bird. No such thing as a "calling bird". (I also hate when the verses are anything BUT 12 drummers, 11 pipers, 10 lord, and 9 ladies...)

And the phrasing of Silent Night is really screwy... it's like

All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin, mother and child

But it should really go:

All is calm
All is brought round yon virgin mother (and child).

(Similarly the third verse should be "Son of God, love's pure light radiant from thy holy face", not "Son of God/Love's pure light/Radiant beams from thy holy face".)

Does this bug anyone else? What are your Christmas carol pet peeves? =P

redbead @ 11:32 am: Merry Christmas from the Home of the First Christmas Tree

Greetings from Riga Latvia Northern/Eastern Europe. Growing up in the State of Washington, I have fond memories of Christmas time. Snow, family get togethers, cutting the Chtistmas Tree, ice skating on the frozen ponds and going out with my facter in the fire truck playing Christmas music over load speakers on top of the truck.

Now I am living in Latvia which looks very much like Washington State.

I just wanted to share that the first record of a Christmas Tree was in the city of Riga Latvia in the year 1510

Happy holidays to all.

Regards, Mike an American living in Riga

melodic_soul @ 05:16 pm: Jumpstart the holiday season!!

I'm so excited to find this community. It's perfect for me, for I love Christmas! The best holiday of the year. The giving, the receiving, and just the whole atmosphere of life during Christmas time! I love snow too, which is what I searched under, and it's because of 'snow' that I found this place. Yay for snow! I love snow, it's so magical, and it really cheers me up. I'm so happy to be a part of this community. I've already brought out my christmas cds and am now listening to them.

My favorite Christmas carol is, right at this moment(for it changes all the time), "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"...and I think Christina Aguilera does a fantastic job at singing it. :) It's also one of my favorites for ME to sing. Heh. I love singing Christmas songs though, I can't really pick one. Anyways, enough of my blabbling. ;)
